According to The Telegraph, Newcastle could reignite their interest in Morgan Gibbs-White as he joins a shortlist of summer transfer targets for Paul Mitchell.
Newcastle are expected to have a huge summer transfer window after failing to secure any new additions during the January transfer window.
Paul Mitchell is leading the recruitment on Tyneside and is yet to make an impactful first team signing to help Newcastle progress in their ambitious project, but did make lucrative moves with outgoings last month.
Cashing on Miguel Almiron for £9m and sending Lloyd Kelly out on loan to Juventus with a £20m obligation to buy attached to it was great business for the club and puts them in an enviable position to strengthen ahead of next season.
It is no secret that Newcastle’s recruitment focus for summer is strengthening the defensive set up and attacking threat, with a huge opportunity to complete the front three with a right winger to join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
This is likely to become an even higher priority if they qualify for European football ahead of next season as Jacob Murphy is currently their only out-and-out option on the right flank.
The Telegraph have reported this week that Newcastle could reignite their interest in Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White and has been named on any attacking targets shortlist.
The England international is listed amongst some other top talents that the club are keeping tabs on, including PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko and Southampton wonderkid Tyler Dibling.
Will Newcastle sign Morgan Gibbs-White?
There is no doubt that Gibbs-White has flourished since his £25m move to the City Ground from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and has rightfully deserved the plaudits he has earned in the last few seasons.
Nottingham Forest are currently third in the Premier League table after an outstanding season under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo, and are in very strong contention to qualify for Champions League football.
This could be the sticking point for Newcastle to get a deal over the line for Gibbs-White if they can’t match Forest’s ambitious endeavours by missing out on a Champions League spot next season.
The 25-year-old – hailed a “positive leader” by former Brighton striker Glenn Murray – is a player that can be deployed in several positions, although most of his career experience comes from his attacking midfield role, he has a wealth of experience on both the right wing and in the centre-forward role.
Over 21 Premier League appearances, the talented playmaker has scored five goals, registered five assist and created six big chances, as well as averaging 1.7 shots, 1.7 key passes, four ball recoveries and 1.4 tackles per game, as per SofaScore.
While the Englishman isn’t the out-and-out winger that the Magpies are in need of, he has all the attributes, experience and talent to take on the challenge, becoming not only a long term solution to complete the front three, but offering availability in other roles that may require rotation.
With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Newcastle to sign Gibbs-White given the opportunity, but would likely face competition and a hefty transfer fee to secure his services.
