According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United have finally come to an agreement with MLS club Atlanta United for Miguel Almiron to depart this month.

Newcastle has had a quiet month so far during the January transfer window, but there is still over a week for them to get some business done before the market closes next Friday.

The summer recruitment plans led to disappointment when the season began and positives were hard to come by, however, Newcastle’s recent resurgence in the Premier League and efforts in the domestic cup competitions have distracted fans from concern to an extent.

Eddie Howe has noted on more than one occasion that the club would require outgoings before they could consider adding new players to the squad this month, which has been a common theme due to their issues surrounding PSR restrictions.

As a result, there has been little expectation for the Magpies to strengthen their squad in recent weeks, especially with little to no progress on offloading players that have become surplus to requirements.

However, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now given a glimmer of hope to Newcastle fans who are dreaming of a right winger signing this January, as the deal to sell Miguel Almiron is edging closer to completion.

Romano revealed last night on X:

“Atlanta United are closing in on Miguel Almirón deal with Newcastle as move’s being completed. Transfer fee around £10m. @MatteMoretto”

Will Newcastle replace Almiron?

With only Jacob Murphy the only out-and-out right winger remaining at the club, if Romano is to be believed then the exit of Almiron must prompt the club to find a replacement as a priority.

Indeed, Joelinton is capable of covering the position and Anthony Gordon has some experience playing on the right side, but with the chance to qualify for Champions League football growing and the opportunity to secure their first trophy in over half a century via the Carabao Cup, it would be a risk to ignore the growing need for a high-quality right winger.

At present, there has been no concrete move reported for Newcastle to acquire such a player, though things move very fast in football and with ten days left to complete business, there is no reason why the club can’t change that very quickly.

The sale of Almiron – once hailed “unique” by Howe – will boost transfer funds to a degree, but it remains unclear how much the North East giants are capable of spending and how any offer would need to be structured to prevent them from being on the wrong side of their financial obligations.

With that being said, Almiron’s exit will be bittersweet for supporters as he has been a huge part of the transformation on Tyneside, but the opportunity to improve his position with a reliable first-team winger is an opportunity too big to miss.
