According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are in the final stages of talks for left-back Matt Targett to join Leeds United in the Championship.

Newcastle United have had a quiet month in the January transfer window, but with many players in the squad becoming surplus to requirements there has been movement on offloading them.

Stalwart Miguel Almiron is set to return to the MLS with his former club Atlanta United, the 30-year-old is reported to have said his goodbyes to the squad and management team at the training ground and is in the final stages of securing a long-term deal across the pond.

The departure of the right winger will see the club bank an estimated £9m this month, which is a great boost to the transfer funds available as Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have been a long-standing concern for the Magpies.

Indeed, with just five days left until the transfer market closes until the summer, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Newcastle will bring in any new additions this week, and will instead invest those funds into a summer squad refresh.

With Jacob Murphy left as the only ‘out-and-out’ right winger in the squad, that position will be a high-priority area to strengthen when the opportunity arises to do so, with Tyler Dibling and Johan Bakayoko already linked to the club over the past few weeks.

However, it is looking like Newcastle are not finished in their efforts to stack up the funds available to the club in January, as Almiron is not the only player that could be making a swift exit before the deadline on Monday.

The Northern Echo reported this morning that the North East giants are in the final stages of communication with Championship leaders Leeds United to complete a deal for Matt Targett to leave this week.

The publication claims that the club have no intention to extend his stay on Tyneside when he enters the final year of his contract next season, so would rather cash in on the 29-year-old now, with Leeds keen to find a low-cost replacement for Junior Firpo.

Should Newcastle sell Matt Targett?

Targett made his successful initial loan move from Aston Villa permanent for £15m back in the summer of 2022, and despite being available for selection has found himself unable to break back into the time.

The outstanding development of Lewis Hall and the reliability of Dan Burn has meant that Targett has fallen out of favour and out of Eddie Howe’s plans for the future of the Newcastle team, so it would make perfect sense to move him on.

It is not known how much Newcastle would be able to command for Targett from Leeds, but they are unlikely to make a full return on their investment though dropping his £100k-a-week wages off the books will only put the Tynesiders further into the green.

With that being said, it would be a great piece of business for Newcastle to complete and will benefit Targett massively in his pursuit for first team football, with a club who have a great chance of returning to the Premier League next season.
