According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are planning new contract talks for star striker Alexander Isak in the summer amid huge interest in the player.

The Magpies returned to their winning ways in their Premier League clash with Southampton over the weekend, and Eddie Howe will be delighted with how his players responded to the 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth.

It was a huge disappointment for the home support to see the incredible unbeaten run come to an end in their last home game, but after taking all three points away from their trip to the south coast, they remain in a great position to compete for European football.

Newcastle are fifth in the Premier League table matching Manchester City for points with a strong opportunity, if they can continue their stunning form, to not only qualify for a European spot but a Champions League campaign next season.

Off the pitch, it has been a relatively quiet month for the Magpies in the January transfer window, with the exit of Miguel Almiron the only confirmed piece of business coming out of the club at present.

Indeed, it would not be ideal to go into the business end of the season without a good amount of depth in the forward line, however, it is clear that the Newcastle hierarchy is looking for the right profile of players to bring the same level of impact as the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak.

Speaking of the Swedish striker, he is currently one of the most talked about players in European football and rightly so, tallying up 19 goals and five assists in all competitions so far this season.

Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (19) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (18) are ahead of him (17) in the Premier League top scorers list this season, which has understandably generated a lot of interest in the talented Tyneside hitman.

Title challenger Arsenal have been constantly linked to Isak in the media, however, there has never been any formal approach or bid made for him and Newcastle have made it clear on several occasions that he is not for sale at any price.

To reiterate their commitment to making Isak their main man for years to come, it has been reported following the victory over Southampton, that the North East giants are preparing to offer Isak a new contract in the summer.

The Telegraph are claiming that, again, the club have zero interest in entertaining any interest or offers for Isak and will look to tie down the Sweden international for the long-term future when the season is over.

Will Alexander Isak stay at Newcastle?

There is no doubt that Isak is one of the most complete strikers in the world right now, what he offers to Newcastle is something that no amount of money could buy them elsewhere.

As a result, it makes perfect sense for the club to do everything they can to include him in their long term plans and if they can secure a spot in Europe ahead of next season, it would likely make a deal much easier to complete.

A player with the talent and quality of Isak should be playing at the very top level with the opportunity to win trophies and compete on the European stage, something that the Newcastle project is hungry for.

So providing the 25-year-old star – hailed “world-class” by Newcastle legend and Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer – with players around him that can consistently match his high levels and compete at an elite level will be imperative in the coming months.

The imminent sale of Almiron means there is a huge opportunity for Newcastle to finally complete the attacking threat with a prolific top level right winger, as this could unlock even more progress not only for the club but for Isak too.

With that being said, it is a great time to be a Newcastle fan with so many incredible assets to put their faith in and if the recruitment of a right winger is done right, there is no reason why Champions League football can’t be a regular reality.
