According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United could reignite interest in Federico Chiesa this January as Italian club Internazionale are already exploring an opportunity to loan the player.
Newcastle United are expected to be active in the January transfer window to bolster their attacking threat in a pursuit to secure European football qualification for next season.
The Magpies are currently eighth in the Premier League table, but will need to find consistency in their form to comfortably compete with a number of clubs desperate to secure a place in the Europa League and Champions League spots at the end of the campaign.
Newcastle have only found the back of the net 13 times so far this season and those numbers will need to significantly improve if they are to climb the table over the coming weeks and months ahead, so the January transfer window is a golden opportunity to find players who can make an instant impact in the forward line.
Indeed, the North East outfit has had its fair share of financial issues and restrictions since the Saudi-led takeover and will need to be mindful of that when and if they approach targets in the new year, which could also make it difficult to capture the right long-term solution.
Now it is being reported that there could be a short-term option worth exploring that won’t require having to look to the depths of squads abroad to bring in a reliable and experienced attacking player.
The Chronicle have suggested that an opportunity to secure a loan deal for Liverpool’s forgotten man Federico Chiesa could present itself as Italy giants Internazionale are keen to acquire the services of the winger for the second half of the season (Tutto Sport).
Newcastle were heavily linked with signing Chiesa on a cut-price deal in the summer before the Merseyside club completed a £12.5m deal with Juventus late into the transfer window.
Should Newcastle loan Federico Chiesa in January?
There is no doubt that Chiesa has shown his quality and potential in the past, but multiple injuries have played a huge part in his struggle to get back to his best over the last two years.
Last season for Juventus the talented Italy international – once hailed “unstoppable” by his national teammate Giorgio Chiellini – scored ten goals and registered three assists in all competitions, which is a great output for a player returning from long-term injury issues.
Unfortunately, the 27-year-old star has struggled to make his mark on the red side of Merseyside as of yet with huge competition for places in their formidable attacking threat with Mohamed Salah in blistering form on the right wing.
On Tyneside, the right wing has become a problem area for the Magpies with Jacob Murphy making minimal impact and Miguel Almiron unable to inspire with limited game time this season, so bringing a winger who is relatively familiar with the Premier League and has an eye for goal would be massively advantageous.
Indeed, it would be ideal to bring a prospect into the club that can become part of the future of the forward line, but with potential financial restrictions at play again, there could be a lot gained from a loan spell to boost goal contributions and improve chances of European football if permanent signings can’t be acquired.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool would be open to loan offers when the transfer market opens and whether Newcastle will grasp the opportunity to sign a short-term solution with minimal financial risk to paper over the cracks of a long-term concern until the end of the season.
