According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Newcastle United have returned with a third offer to sign Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi.

Newcastle United will be in full preparation for their Premier League return this week, hoping that they have done enough to significantly improve their performances going into the new season.

Eddie Howe had to juggle one of the biggest injury crises in the top flight over the last 12 months, and will still be without centre-back duo Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles for at least half the season as the pair recover from ACL surgery.

As a result, it makes perfect sense for the Magpies to bolster their defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes and Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi is one player that has become the top target.

Newcastle have, at this point, had two bids rejected by Palace in their endeavours to get a deal done before the new season kicks off at the weekend, however, they have refused to give up on their pursuit.

Sky News reporter Keith Downie has now taken to X to reveal that Newcastle have submitted a third bid:

“Newcastle have returned with a third offer for Marc Guéhi. I understand the increased offer is under consideration by Crystal Palace — and talks are ongoing.”

“The latest bid was made by #NUFC over the weekend.”

“Newcastle offered in the region of £50m last week. Palace looking for around £65m for the England defender. #NUFC hoping for a compromise.”

Will Newcastle sign Marc Guehi this summer?

There is no doubt that Guehi is an exciting long term prospect for the North East outfit, but it won’t be easy to get a deal done if they can’t meet Palace’s expectations.

It’s obvious that the South Londoners have a price tag in mind, which the Newcastle hierarchy have been challenging, however, this transfer could drag out and leave the Magpies with little option to find an alternative in the dying days of the transfer window.

Guehi has not only been a consistent and reliable performer for the Eagles, but proved his worth on the international stage this summer at the Euros with Gareth Southgate’s England.

The 24-year-old centre-back offers a fantastic long-term replacement for Fabian Schar who at 32 years old is coming to the latter stages of his career on Tyneside, so it would be a worthwhile investment should they need to meet the £65m valuation.

With that being said, the Magpies’ move for Guehi is definitely one to keep an eye on over the coming days as it could prove to be difficult to convince Palace to part ways with one of their star players.
