According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Newcastle United are working on one last-minute move for a potential incoming before the transfer window closes.
Newcastle have struggled to be dominant and ambitious in the transfer window this summer, with questionable performances since the season started adding pressure to the club’s hierarchy.
The Magpies have had a somewhat uncomfortable start in their return to the Premier League and Carabao Cup action in recent weeks, with a hard-fought four points tallied up in the top flight, while a stalemate with Nottingham Forest left them needing to win on penalties at the City Ground earlier this week for EFL cup progression.
It has been the worst secret kept in football that Newcastle have been determined to make Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi their marquee signing this summer, however, despite a number of bids and intense negotiations any potential for a move looks to be dead in the water.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has spoken out in a press conference today to relay that Guehi will remain in South London when the transfer window closes tonight:
“Yes I can confirm [he will stay]. But I was never in doubt,”
“Congratulations to our owners because they didn’t give in.”
“Thank you to Marc, he was always open with me. All the rumours didn’t influence his performances. He always told me that he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and that is always for me the most important thing.”
Although it will be bitterly disappointing for Newcastle fans to read that Guehi will not be making a late move, there is a glimmer of hope that an alternative could be found in the dying hours, as The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards took to X this afternoon to hint at a potential incoming.
Edwards revealed:
“Newcastle are working on one potential incoming today. Far from guaranteed it will happen but they are trying and there is a chance. Feel free to insert jokes about not getting it over the line below #NUFC”
Who are Newcastle linked to on Deadline Day?
There are a few players that have been linked to Newcastle over the last few days that could be the mystery incoming that Edwards has earmarked, but it remains to be seen just who the club are working on.
Chelsea centre-backs Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah have been consistently named as potential suitors to add depth to the defensive set up after missing out on Guehi.
However, the more likely new addition comes in the form of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford after Newcastle had a £16m bid rejected for the young talent earlier in the transfer window.
It is reported by the Daily Mail that the Championship side are looking for nothing short of £20m and the North East outfit are keen to get a deal done before the transfer window closes.
While Trafford presents a great opportunity to provide experience and youth to the goalkeeping department, it is not the most pressing concern to be addressed in the squad going into the final hours of the transfer window.
A centre-back signing would be a more impactful acquisition in the current state of play with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles out until at least the turn of the year while they recover from ACL surgery, and with the right profile of signing it allows Howe to start planning for a long-term future without 32-year-old Fabian Schar.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see what business is left to be wrapped up on Tyneside today and what will be made a priority for the recruitment team at this crucial stage.
