According to Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are one of the clubs keeping tabs on Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville this summer.
The Magpies have a big summer transfer window ahead of them as they look to learn from mistakes made over the last campaign and strengthen the squad significantly with top-quality talent.
Eddie Howe and the club’s hierarchy will be well aware that they will be operating under challenging circumstances when it comes to recruitment due to FFP obligations, to avoid any negative attention or punishment from the Premier League.
As a result, it would come as no surprise to the St James’ Park faithful that there is a lot of potential for players to depart from the club over the coming weeks and months to make way for fresh perspectives.
Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and even Bruno Guimaraes have been touted for moves away from the club, with the latter only being allowed to move on should his £100m release clause be satisfied before July 1st.
The club are also already being linked to incoming business too, with the Shields Gazette reporting today that Newcastle are one of the clubs keeping an eye on Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville’s ongoing situation after the Championship giants failed to secure Premier League promotion last weekend in the play-off final.
As per the report, the Tynesiders have the talented forward on their list of players who could come in and improve the squad next season, however, he is currently considered one of Leeds’ most valuable assets and will, in turn, command a high transfer fee for interested suitors.
Football Insider has also reported today that the Newcastle and Aston Villa target is valued at the £35-40million mark currently, and with so much interest in Summerville it looks unlikely they would be willing to consider much movement on that fee.
Should Newcastle sign Crysencio Summerville?
There is no doubt that Summerville has had an impressive season at Elland Road and was recently named Championship Player of the Season, but is he the profile of player that Newcastle need to be targeting this summer?
Over 43 Championship appearances, the 22-year-old scored 19 goals, registered nine assists and created a whopping 17 big chances, as well as averaging 1.2 shots on target, 3.4 ball recoveries, 1.4 tackles, 2.3 successful dribbles and 5.8 duels won per game, as per SofaScore.
Both Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon play similar roles to Summerville, with the latter arguably Newcastle’s best player last season and unlikely lose his spot on either the right or left flank, with the left-sided role his strongest position.
Barnes, despite being sidelined for long periods last season, has also shown glimpses of quality when he has been available for selection in the dying fixtures of the season, and is unlikely to be sidelined next season for another winger opposite certain starter Gordon.
Jacob Murphy and Almiron also operate in the wider forward roles, so unless Newcastle sell up some of their wingers it doesn’t make sense for them to spend upwards of £40m on Summerville at this time, especially if he is unlikely to start ahead of Barnes or Gordon.
With that being said, it will be a situation definitely worth closely watching for supporters this summer, but considering there are other positions in the team that require more urgent investment in, it would be surprising to see this deal get done.
