Newcastle United have secured a new long-term contract with their exciting teenage sensation, Lewis Miley, and there is no doubt that the agreement will be extremely popular with the supporters following the breakthrough the midfielder has had over the season so far.

The Magpies have been plagued with injury issues throughout their campaign so far which has massively hindered their opportunity to retain their spot inside the Premier League top four and ultimately cost them their Champions League campaign, along with progression in the EFL Cup.

Newcastle failed to qualify for the next round of the Champions League or a drop into the Europa League after finishing bottom of their group, and were caught out by Chelsea on penalties in the EFL Cup after playing a makeshift starting eleven for almost all of their fixtures over the last few months.

Sandro Tonali was arguably the biggest blow to Eddie Howe’s plans after he was given a 10-month ban for illegally betting during his time at AC Milan, and will not be available for selection until next season.

However, with every cloud comes a silver lining and a hidden gem was unearthed in a 17-year-old local boy who possessed the talent but had a point to prove on whether he could apply that by stepping up to the senior squad and being effective in his role alongside and against players who have years of experience.

Miley – who scored his first-ever Premier League goal against Fulham back in December – has not disappointed, showing bravery and confidence beyond his years in the midfield set-up alongside the likes of Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, and Bruno Guimaraes, rightfully earning himself several opportunities in the starting eleven and now earning himself a new long-term contract.

The club’s youngest-ever Premier League debutant spoke out upon signing his new contract on Monday (via NUFC.co.uk):

“It’s a really proud moment for me and my family to sign another professional contract with my boyhood club. I couldn’t be prouder.

“Hopefully I can continue to do well over the next few years, and I can keep improving my performance and getting better as a player.

“It’s a real joy playing in front of the fans, especially to hear them chanting my name. Their support means so much to me and my family, and I’m looking forward to the future.”

Whilst Howe also revealed his excitement for Miley’s long-term commitment and future at the club:

“Lewis is an exceptional young talent and has all the attributes to be a huge part of Newcastle United’s journey, both now and for many years to come.

“He has already contributed to the team with excellent performances in very challenging circumstances this season, and we are very excited about what is to come as he continues to develop his game and grow with us.”

“I’d like to acknowledge the role of the club’s Academy in Lewis’ development. He is a shining example of the club’s talent pathway and he can hopefully inspire our younger players to follow in his footsteps.”

Newcastle United will head to Villa Park in their Premier League clash against Aston Villa this evening and it is expected that Miley will be in the starting eleven as he continues to complete the midfield trio in the absence of Joelinton, Willock and Tonali.
