Conor Gallagher is playing for his Chelsea future as Newcastle United continue to track the midfielder, sources have told Nothing but Newcastle.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The England international was of interest to the club during both the summer and winter transfer windows.

Having excelled at Crystal Palace last season, the 23-year-old had initially struggled for first-team minutes back at Chelsea, though has recently come back into the side.

Still, given the widescale rebuild the Blues are undertaking, there is a chance Gallagher could be sold as the club look to balance their heavy spending with player sales. While Gallagher is thought to be popular figure in west London and harbours little active desire to leave, the fact he is a homegrown player would see Chelsea bank any transfer fee as pure profit on their balance sheet.

Indeed, there could be a scenario in which the west London giants are forced to consider a sale in order to raise funds.

Newcastle lack options in the middle of the park, particularly with Jonjo Shelvey leaving for Nottingham Forest, and the club hold a long-standing interest in the England international.

Why do Newcastle need a midfielder so badly?

Given the sheer scale of the problems the new owners inherited after the takeover, it has simply not been possible to add numbers to the team’s midfield options while strengthening in other areas.

Bruno Guimaraes has clearly had a profound impact on the club since his arrival but the Brazilian is the only midfield player to arrive. That, of course, is not a criticism of the club, but even Guimaraes cannot do it all himself.

What has been said about Gallagher and Newcastle?

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Tam McManus backed Gallagher for a move to St James’ Park.

“I think Eddie Howe’s style would really, really suit him,” he said.

“I would almost say that deal is nailed on because Newcastle wanted him in January and they are the biggest club to show interest.”
