Newcastle United are interested in the signing of Antonee Robinson, according to Football Insider

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The American international has been a key figure during a successful season for Fulham, starting 20 of their 24 games thus far.

Newcastle recruitment staff are understood to have cast a keen eye over the 25-year-old this season and have delivered rave reviews on his performances.

While Eddie Howe has Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett as options at left-back, the Newcastle manager is said to want a new addition.

Burn, of course, has impressed and has been able to keep Targett out of the side, while Lewis and Dummett have hardly featured all season.

Robinson himself is understood to be eager to play in the Champions League and, with a fair wind, Newcastle could perhaps be in a position to offer him that this summer.

Manchester City, however, are also said to be interested.

How does Robinson compare to Burn?

According to the report, Howe wants a more attacking option down the left-hand side.

In comparison to Burn, Newcastle’s starting left-back, Robinson would certainly look an upgrade in that respect. As per FBREF data, the Fulham star averages more shot-creating actions per game (1.92 to 0.97) and has contributed more successful take-ons (17 to 4), more carries into the final third (55 to 14) and more key passes (17 to 8) this season.

While that’s not to say Robinson is necessarily a better defender than Burn, who has formed a key part of the League’s meanest backline, he would certainly fit what Howe is reportedly looking for.

Experienced in the Premier League and at the age where he can still improve, the USMNT full-back looks a logical signing.

What has been said about Robinson and Newcastle?

Speaking to Football Insider in December, pundit Noel Whelan urged Newcastle to move for Robinson.

“If they went out to get him he would probably be their first choice. I think he fits the bill for what they are now. They are a very attacking unit. From what we have seen from the World Cup, he can do all parts of that game. From box to box defending, he has been excellent.”
