Noted transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio has tipped James Maddison for a move to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The England international was the subject of a number of bids over the course of the summer, though Leicester stood firm and rejected all offers.

Maddison is only under contract at the King Power Stadium until the summer of 2024 and was reportedly keen on the idea of a move to St James’ Park. While he is thought to remain a target, Newcastle aren’t thought to be likely to spend big in January, potentially holding off a fresh move until the end of the season.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, such has been his level of form. While Maddison did not feature for England at the World Cup despite a somewhat surprise late call-up, the midfielder has scored seven goals while registering a further four assists in 13 Premier League appearances.

What has been said about Maddison and Newcastle?

Speaking to soccernews.nl, Di Marzio said: “I think he will transfer in the coming summer because it is very difficult to make deals in the January window.

“It could be Newcastle, but that just depends: will they secure a Champions League ticket? If they do, it would be a very attractive destination.”

Should Newcastle target Maddison again?

Absolutely.

One of the most creative midfielders in the Premier League, the prolific return he’s mustered this season underlines the former Norwich City youngster’s quality at the elite level. Clearly a target already, it’s hard to imagine the interest having waned given Maddison’s performance.

Coming towards the end of his contract, Maddison will likely have an awful lot of suitors. If Newcastle are playing European football next season, perhaps they can lure him.
