Callum Wilson is “progressing” in his rehabilitation following a strain picked up while training with England.

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

The Newcastle forward – who has consistently struggled with injuries – has represented his country at the World Cup twice this winter, claiming an assist for Jack Grealish on his tournament debut.

Wilson was then handed a runout against Wales as the Three Lions secured their spot in the knockout rounds but did not feature against Senegal in the last-16.

The 30-year-old is believed to have suffered a “minor injury” though England’s official Twitter account confirmed Wilson was making progress.

Will Wilson even feature for England from here?

That looks doubtful.

Even if Wilson was fit, it’s difficult to imagine a situation in which a fully-fit Harry Kane comes off at any point from here. Should England beat France on Saturday, they will be back in the World Cup semi-finals and the captain will almost certainly play in every single minute barring injury.

While that’s not to say Wilson could not perform at such a level, Kane is simply too important.

Given it’s only thought to be a minor strain, that could be good news for Newcastle. If he’s in a position to get straight back into action when the Premier League resumes, Eddie Howe will surely be delighted.

What has been said about Wilson’s fitness?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, injury expert Ben Dinnery suggested Wilson would likely miss the rest of the World Cup.

“Not in the too-distant past, Wilson had that hamstring issue that kept him out for Newcastle for the best part of that early part of the season,” he said.

“He returned, with his form forcing his way into the [England] reckoning.

“Because of the type of format we’ve got in Qatar in this World Cup setting, a minor strain, we could be looking at typically anywhere between sort of seven to 14 days.

“If indeed that is the case, that would likely rule him out of the tournament.”
