Bruno Guimaraes suffered an injury scare while training in Turin with the Brazilian national squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

The 25-year-old was included in Tite’s 26-man squad for the tournament in Qatar but does face major competition for a midfield berth.

Manchester United pair Fred and Casemiro, along with Liverpool’s Fabinho and West Ham star Lucas Paqueta all offer strong options to a Brazilian team looking to end their country’s 20-year wait for a World Cup.

According to Reuters (via the Evening Standard), the incident involving Guimaraes came after Real Madrid forward Rodrygo stepped on the midfielder’s foot, with the Newcastle star then needing treatment.

While the former Lyon man was able to complete the session, Reuters report Guimaraes was seen in some discomfort.

Will Guimaraes start for Brazil in Qatar?

Despite his stunning form for Newcastle, that would seem unlikely at this stage.

Paqueta is tipped to lineup alongside Casemiro and Fred in midfield and only two of Guimaraes’ eight caps have come as starts. With Tite boasting such experienced options in the middle of the park, it’s difficult to imagine too much changing given how high the stakes are.

Still, that does not mean Guimaraes cannot be important. As he’s shown on Tyneside, this is a player capable of operating across a number of roles in midfield and the introduction of more substitutes obviously lends itself to more players being given run-outs.

Should Brazil overcome their first two games – against Serbia and Switzerland – perhaps Guimaraes will have a better chance to be in line to start the conclusion of Group G against Cameroon on December 2.
