Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth has described Garang Kuol as a “very promising young talent” following his move to St James Park.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

On Friday, the club completed a move for the 18-year-old, beating other European teams to the forward’s signature.

Australian international Kuol will continue with A-League side Central Coast Mariners until January 2023 and will reportedly be loaned out to a Portuguese side as he will unlikely qualify for a UK work permit due as things stand.

According to the Daily Mail, there’s even a chance Newcastle could consider keeping the teenage forward, who has scored four goals in 8 League games, should he impress at this winter’s World Cup.

How excited should Newcastle fans be about Kuol?

Clearly, it’s hard to build too much of a picture of a player who has made only ten senior appearances over the course of his career.

Still, Kuol is thought to have attracted the attention of both Borussia Dortmund and Celtic too, which is an indicator of his early promise. Praised by Barcelona manager Xavi after a pre-season meeting between the Catalan giants and the A-League All Stars, Kuol fits in to what Newcastle were looking for over the course of the summer.

Indeed, while Hugo Ekitike had a whole season behind him at Reims, part of the reason Newcastle attempted to sign him was thought to be because they wanted a young striker to cover, compete with and partner Callum Wilson. Obviously, Alexander Isak has also arrived, but perhaps Kuol could – work permit allowing – fit that profile too.

What has Ashworth said about Kuol?

Speaking to the club’s official website, Ashworth said: “Garang is a very promising young talent and we are excited that he’ll be continuing his development as a Newcastle United player.

“Our philosophy is to invest in our Academy and in exciting young players for the future, as well as in players required to make an immediate impact in the first team.

“We wish Garang the best of luck in his remaining games with Central Coast Mariners and we hope to see him on the international stage again very soon.”
