Timo Werner is expected to re-join RB Leipzig should he leave Chelsea this summer despite interest from Newcastle United, sources have told Nothing But Newcastle.
What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?
Earlier this week, NBN brought you the news that the German international was of interest to Newcastle.
Unhappy with his role at Stamford Bridge and having cast doubt on his own future, the 26-year-old had emerged as a target to consider as Eddie Howe attempts to strengthen his frontline ahead of the Premier League season.
Chelsea are willing to sanction Werner’s exit, although sources have told NBN that Newcastle have (so far) failed in an enquiry, much as they did for teammate Armando Broja.
Instead, RB Leipzig look like the favourites to land Werner this summer. As it stands, Thomas Tuchel is willing to keep the striker, although there is a feeling their relationship has gone on a downward spiral during pre-season.
Is this a blow for Newcastle?
Only if another forward isn’t signed.
Clearly, Werner hasn’t always convinced at Chelsea but surely few would doubt his arrival being an exciting one at St James’ Park. A regular in the German national and having won the Champions League, the former Leipzig forward would have been an upgrade on Howe’s current options in terms of pedigree.
Still, the fact Leipzig can offer Champions League football and an environment in which Werner has already thrived obviously makes them stiff competition.
Newcastle, then, will most likely have to focus on other targets.
Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet is a target, while James Maddison of Leicester City has been the subject of two rejected bids.
