Eddie Howe has revealed the latest on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Joao Pedro.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

Having already rejected a bid, Watford were braced for another approach from Newcastle, who have made their Brazilian forward a key target during the final few days of the transfer window.

Omitted from the squad for their Championship draw with Preston, manager Rob Edwards has previously admitted the club would have to discuss a new offer should it come close to Watford’s valuation, though they are eager to keep the 20-year-old amid their promotion push.

Reports on Monday suggested a deal was close, although Howe has since shot that down.

What did Howe say about Joao Pedro?

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Tranmere Rovers, Howe told reporters (via the Press Association): “I think that is not entirely accurate, but I’m not dealing with those things minute to minute or day to day.

“I’m sort of hearing in the background what’s happening, but I don’t think that’s correct.”

How badly do Newcastle need to sign a striker?

Obviously, it’s promising to see the club aren’t rushing into deals simply for the sake of it.

Still, the fact Callum Wilson is already having to undergo a scan after feeling a tightness in his hamstring only three games into the season is a worry and underlines how light Newcastle are in attacking areas.

Without him, it’s difficult to see where the goals are coming from. Fabian Schar screamers and Kieran Trippier free-kicks are fantastic to watch, but they are not to be relied upon long-term.

It’s imperative further reinforcement arrives.
