Newcastle United’s unbeaten record in the Premier League thus far comes under significant threat on Sunday as champions Manchester City roll into town.
Clearly, it’s important not to draw too many definitive conclusions from only two games, but Eddie Howe’s side have looked solid in the opening couple of weekends. Indeed, had a key decision gone another way against Brighton on Saturday, Newcastle could be sitting pretty on maximum points after a routine win over Nottingham Forest and a hard-fought victory on the south coast.
Callum Wilson, however, saw his goal ruled out but Newcastle proved resilient to deny Graham Potter’s side. All in all, it’s been a pretty promising start to Howe’s first full campaign, although City clearly provide a different test.
Guardiola’s side thrashed Newcastle on both occasions last time out and have since welcomed a certain Erling Haaland into the ranks. While the team’s home record should be a source of confidence heading into Sunday’s game, there’s no doubt it’s going to be difficult.
Here’s everything you need to know about the meeting.

Newcastle vs Manchester City team news
Howe hopes to welcome Ryan Fraser back into the squad, while a late decision will be made on Matt Targett’s fitness. Elsewhere, it’s difficult to see too many changes from the draw with Brighton.
For City, Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer are both available, with only Aymeric Laporte a certain absentee.
Newcastle vs Manchester City prediction
Newcastle have been hugely impressive at home for a while now, although to suggest they have so quickly closed the gap on City after a 9-0 aggregate loss to Guardiola’s side would be somewhat optimistic.
While it’s reasonable to assume there will be a better performance, City are still big favourites.
Man City to win 3-1.
