Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has confirmed there is a “good chance” Callum Wilson makes his return to action against Manchester City on Sunday.

The forward has not played since December’s draw against Manchester United but remains the club’s highest goalscorer this season, with six goals in 14 Premier League starts.

While it’s surely unlikely the 30-year-old will start after missing so much of the season, it is promising to see him back in contention in at least some capacity.

Elsewhere, Howe also revealed a late decision would be made on Kieran Trippier. Influential in helping Newcastle lift themselves out of the relegation scrap at the turn of the year, the England international is back in training but is said to be slightly behind Wilson in terms of making a fully recovery.

Fabian Schar, so key under Howe, is a doubt, meaning Jamaal Lascelles is the most likely candidate to partner Dan Burn in defence.

Newcastle United predicted XI vs Manchester City (4-3-3): Dubravka; Krafth, Lascelles, Burn, Targett; Shelvey, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Saint-Maximin, Wood, Almiron

Doubtful: Fabian Schar (foot)

Injured: Ryan Fraser (hamstring)

Referee: Stuart Atwell, Jarred Gillet (VAR)
