Paul Dummett is set to sign a new deal at Newcastle United, according to The Sun

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

Following the news Fabian Schar had extended his stay by another two-years, as well as a fresh update in regards to Sean Longstaff’s future with a four-year-deal offered to the midfielder, decision-makers at St James’ Park appear to be getting their house in order.

Indeed, academy graduate Dummett is set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season, although there are reportedly “signs” the 30-year-old could now extend his stay on Tyneside.

According to the report, the former Wales international could snub a potential move away from the club he joined at the age of 9 on a free transfer and commit his future to Newcastle.

Why would Newcastle want to keep Dummett?

On the face of it, trying to keep a player to have made only three Premier League appearances this season and one to have consistently suffered with injuries might sound somewhat strange.

Still, Dummett is able to operate in a number of positions and, when fit, could be used as a reliable squad player. With Newcastle potentially needing to raise further funds through player sales this summer, having a player able to fill in at left-back and in central defensive areas could help pad out the squad.

Jamal Lewis, at 24, is surely likely to attract a bigger fee in the transfer market, albeit it’s hard to imagine anything approaching the £15m paid for him in 2020, while Matt Targett’s long-term future is still unclear. Ciaran Clark, meanwhile, has previously attracted the interest of Championship sides.

Frankly, Dummett is a cheap and fairly reliable back-up option in two areas. According to SpotRac data, his current deal is worth around £35k-p/w in wages.

What has Eddie Howe said about Dummett?

Last month, Eddie Howe spoke positively about the defender’s future.

“I really like Paul,” he told The Chronicle.

“I think behind the scenes he’s had a consistent period where he’s trained. I think that’s what he needed. He’s had various injuries.

“But he’s a leader within the group. He’s not the most vocal but in terms of a role model and his history, journey through, he has a huge amount of respect from staff and players, the way he conducts himself.

“He’s a very good player on top of that. Certainly he’s someone we want to keep.”
