Newcastle United hope Jonjo Shelvey will be fit to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The midfielder missed the losses away at Chelsea and Everton prior to the international break, having previously started every game for which he has been available during Eddie Howe’s time at St James’ Park.

While the 30-year-old is understood to have moved past his injury concern, Shelvey suffered with illness and missed some training sessions in the build-up for the trip to Spurs. Speaking prior to the game, Howe suggested there was a hope the influential midfielder could play.

Elsewhere, the Newcastle United head coach also talked up the return of Allan Saint-Maximin. While the Frenchman did come on against both Chelsea and Everton, it’d be fair to say the Frenchman is yet to get up to speed, with the hope being that his full week of training out in Dubai can lead to an improvement.

Fabian Schar and Martin Dubravka are both confirmed to have trained despite pulling out of their respective international squads.

Newcastle United predicted XI (4-3-3): Dubravka, Manquillo, Burn, Schar, Targett, Shelvey, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wood, Fraser

Injured: Callum Wilson (groin), Kieran Trippier (foot)

Time and date: 4.30pm BST, Sunday April 3, 2022

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

TV channel: Sky Sports

Referee: Martin Atkinson, Paul Tierney (VAR)
