French football expert Tom Williams has shared some exciting insight into Bruno Guimaraes.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

Amid all the excitement of a transfer window to have culminated with two signings on deadline day in the shape of Matt Targett and Dan Burn amid chases for Jesse Lingard and Hugo Ekitike, it’s easy to forget Newcastle had already wrapped up one of the biggest deals in Europe.

Bruno Guimaraes, who had been tracked by Arsenal and Everton, signed a four-and-a-half-year contract on Tyneside in a deal thought to be worth around £35m up front and an additional £6.6m in add-ons.

A leading midfielder in one of Europe’s major leagues and a regular in Tite’s Brazil squads of late, his was arguably the statement signing of the first transfer window of the PIF era.

What did Williams say about Guimaraes’ style of play?

Speaking on Monday’s episode of The Totally Football Show Podcast, Williams said (38:11): “He’s brilliant.

“He’s an absolutely brilliant footballer. He’s a very well-rounded central midfield organiser.

“He’s got great feet, he’s a brilliant passer of the ball, he’s got a great engine. He does pretty much everything you could ask of a deep-lying central midfielder.”

What are the Brazilian star’s best statistics?

Given Newcastle’s well-documented struggles in midfield amid Joe Willock’s dip in form and Isaac Hayden’s injury, Guimaraes looks like he can have quite the impact.

Clearly, he will take time to adapt to life in the Premier League and it’s rarely as easy as merely translating statistics across countries and playing styles but FBREF‘s data is certainly promising.

According to them, the Brazilian ranks within Europe’s leading 90% of central midfielders playing across the big five leagues over the past year for pressures, tackles, progressive carries, progressive passes and passes attempted per game.
