Newcastle United’s interest in Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell is “firming up”, according to The Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

With Kieran Trippier now signed, things only look to be ramping on the transfer front.

While there is still work to be done in strengthening the defence amid a fresh bid for Sven Botman, Newcastle are seemingly keen to bring Cantwell to the club this month too.

Indeed, the 23-year-old has rarely featured for the club this season, making only five starts during a miserable campaign at Carrow Road.

Why would Newcastle want to sign Cantwell?

Obviously, the prospect of signing a player hardly involved at 0ne of the worst sides in the division doesn’t instantly sound like the most ambitious move in the world.

Still, this season does not provide a full reflection on Cantwell’s ability. Described as an “exceptional, exceptional player” by pundit Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live in June 2020 and a “shining star” by Alan Hutton in October of that year, Cantwell scored six goals and registered a further two assists during Norwich’s equally as bleak 2019-20 Premier League campaign.

Given Eddie Howe and the PIF ownership are thought to value Premier League experience, signing a 23-year-0ld attacker would make sense in order to further pad out the squad.

What has been said about Todd Cantwell?

Speaking to This is Futbol in the summer of 2021, pundit Dean Windass talked up the player’s ability.

“He gets box-to-box, will get you goals from midfield. And there’s not many players that will get you goals from midfield.”
