Fabrizio Romano has revealed Newcastle United’s thoughts amid a deadline day collapse in the deal to bring Hugo Ekitike to the club.

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The 19-year-old Reims striker had been touted as a potential target earlier in the transfer window though the trail looked to have gone cold. Still, a move did appear to have been revived on the final day of the window with multiple reports suggesting Newcastle had agreed a fee with the French club.

Ekitike, however, is not thought to have fancied the idea of swapping clubs midseason.

Obviously, given the bid, that looks like a blow for Newcastle. A highly-rated young forward heralded as ‘the next Mbappe’ by some, it’s hard to put a positive spin on the situation, albeit defensive signings were always the key.

Still, according to Romano, top brass on Tyneside weren’t keen on some of the demands Reims were asking for.

What did Romano say about the Ekitike deal?

Taking to Twitter after the move broke down, Romano wrote: “Newcastle were also not happy with sell on clause for future 30% to Reims.”

What else has been said about Hugo Ekitike?

The Daily Telegraph‘s Luke Edwards shared his thoughts on the situation on deadline day.

“You can understand why Ekitike would be hesitant to join #nufc in a rush at the end of January”, he wrote.

“He’s 19-years-old and only just started playing for Reims regularly. Fingers crossed it still happens but if it falls through not a disaster. He was the luxury buy not a necessity.”
