Rodrigo Vilca could be set for a quick-fire exit at Newcastle United, according to The I.
What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?
Naturally, much of the focus so far has been around potential incomings following the club’s takeover. Still, it’s easy to forget that, as much as the new regime might want their own players in place, they will have to make room in both the squad and on the wage bill over the next few windows.
Vilca, who is currently on loan at League One club Doncaster Rovers, only joined Newcastle in October 2020 from Deportivo Municipal. Now, however, there is reportedly interest in the 22-year-old from capital club Alianza Lima.
How many games has Rodrigo Vilca played in England?
Having only been on these shores for a short time, Vilca has only ever actually played 13 senior games in England.
All of those have come for Doncaster and they have yielded 2 goals and 2 assists, though he has missed the last five outings in the third tier.
Interestingly, Transfermarkt’s positional data would indicate that he’s operated on both wings for Richie Wellens’ side.
Why did Newcastle want to sign Vilca in the first place?
Back in September, Peruvian journalist Diego Montalavan told Nothing But Newcastle: “Vilca is an attacking midfielder who is comfortable as a 10, 8 or even an LW.”
“I think Vilca can suit the Premier League over the next few seasons, for sure, but there needs to be some work done’. The physicality shown in the Premier League is not the same as Liga 1.”
Clearly, Newcastle are now a different club (or at least are trying to be) and perhaps the new ownership view Vilca’s status, even as a long-term prospect, differently.
