Eddie Howe is already planning a triple raid in January, according to Football Insider

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

The Newcastle head coach will reportedly be backed by big funds (which is somewhat of a conflict against previous reports from The Daily Telegraph) in an effort to help the club beat the drop.

Indeed, the 43-year-old’s priority is believed to be bringing two new central defenders to the club, as well as a central midfielder. Targets are said to have been drawn up, with Howe stressing the need to improve in those areas particularly when the window opens.

Is that a surprise?

Not really.

Over the course of the summer, Steve Bruce was keen on late moves for Cameron Carter-Vickers and Hamza Choudhury, only for Mike Ashley to refuse to release any extra funds on Deadline Day.

While those players in particular might not be targeted again, it does speak to areas of the team that have been severely neglected in the last few years. Not since Emil Krafth (who has hardly convinced) have the club spent money on a defender and only Joe Willock has been purchased in midfield since Mikel Merino in 2017.

Defensively, Newcastle are the second-worst team in the Premier League this season and their backline was labeled as of a ‘Championship’ standard by Jamie Carragher in October, while the likes of The Athletic have bemoaned the lack of dynamism in central midfield.

Who has been linked with Newcastle?

Defensively, the likes of James Tarkowski and Conor Coady have been linked as potential signings, while Dele Alli and Ross Barkley have been mooted as midfield targets.
