What’s the latest Newcastle United manager news?
As a result of the 60-year-old’s precarious position, as well as the club’s takeover, plenty of names have been linked with the job. Nothing But Newcastle have been told of an approach to Antonio Conte while Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have also been touted as potential candidates.
Howe, meanwhile, was linked with the post prior to the change of ownership. Clearly, there’s a certain logic to the idea of him moving to St James’ Park given he has experience in the Premier League, is currently out of work and has coached the likes of Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser to great success.
What has been said about Howe’s chances of the job?
Writing in The Athletic, Caulkin revealed that although Howe had been discussed amongst board members, he was unlikely to come into the new owners’ thinking.
“I know that members of the board have discussed Howe amongst themselves, but I don’t think he’s on the list I mentioned,” he wrote.
Would appointing Howe be a good idea?
While there are certainly benefits to the idea of appointing Howe, it could be a big risk at the moment.
Indeed, his time on the south coast ended in a relegation after his Bournemouth side conceded 65 times. Given Newcastle’s problems in defence this season, playing in such an open fashion seems like a bad idea, particularly considering there is still some time to go before squad issues can be fixed in the January transfer window.
Reports from Football Insider also recently suggested Howe was keen to wait to see if the Southampton job opened up too. From both sides, it wouldn’t appear to work at the moment.
