Decision-makers at Newcastle United are split over the potential signing of Will Hughes this summer, according to The Sun.
What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?
The 26-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move up to St James’ Park for a while now amid a chronic lack of investment in that particular area of the squad up until the recent signing of Joe Willock on a permanent basis. Out of contract next summer, the former Derby County man is – on paper – an attractive proposition.
Indeed, a talented homegrown option yet to truly hit his prime yet still coming with a decent amount of Premier League experience would certainly be a logical addition.
So, why the split?
Not much detail is given in the report but the signing of Willock may be a factor here.
With the club reportedly operating on a relatively low budget this summer and strengthening in central defence thought to be a priority, perhaps top brass at St James’ Park feel their additions in midfield are already done for now.
While that’s not exactly the most ambitious idea in the world, it would seem like a logical decision for this regime to make considering all we’ve seen from them over the years.
What has been said about Will Hughes and Newcastle?
Speaking to the Transfer Tavern back in July, former Newcastle defender Steve Howey claimed Hughes would jump at the chance to move to Tyneside.
“I would imagine Will Hughes would want to join Newcastle because it’s a huge club,” he said.
“Watford are back in the Premier League, but it would be a huge move for him, and that’s not being disrespectful towards Watford.”
