Newcastle United have slapped a £10m price tag on Sean Longstaff, according to The Daily Mail

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

Manager Steve Bruce is believed to have been told he must sell before he can further strengthen his squad before the close of the transfer window on August 31st. With that in mind, he’s said to be open to selling a number of players in an effort to create space for more new arrivals.

Longstaff has been linked with a move to Everton in order to link up with former boss Rafa Benitez. Now, they along with the likes of Southampton are thought to have been quoted a fee of around £10m for the 23-year-old, who is out of contact in the summer of 2022.

Should Newcastle sell Longstaff?

As much of a shame as it would be to see a talented academy graduate leave St James’ Park, it might be a necessary sale.

The report suggests there is little talk of Longstaff – once compared to Michael Carrick upon his initial breakthrough – signing a new contract, so it’s important to try and bank some money for him while the club still can. With Joe Willock signed and Hamza Choudhury thought to be a target, at least Newcastle could feasibly refresh their options in midfield, meaning the need for Longstaff becomes less urgent.

Of course, £10m is a marked decline from the £50m price tag the club reportedly set Manchester United in the summer of 2019 but Longstaff has struggled to wholly convince in the Bruce era.

If it’s possible to sell him this summer, Newcastle must seriously consider it.

What has been said about Longstaff’s future?

Speaking to Football Insider recently, pundit Kevin Phillips claimed it’d be good business to sell the player – who made only 15 Premier League starts last season – on this summer.

“Longstaff hasn’t played loads of Premier League games but he does have that experience,” he said.

“From Newcastle’s point of view, he doesn’t play that often and it could be great business to move him on.

“It would free up a wage for Bruce to get someone with a bit more experience.

“I’m surprised Benitez is in for him but he obviously likes him and Longstaff played well under him.”
