Newcastle United have moved into pole position in the race to sign Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe, according to the Manchester Evening News

What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

Progress has been frustratingly slow for the club as they look to strengthen ahead of the new season.

Indeed, a move for loan star Joe Willock is seemingly no closer to than it was at the end of the 2020/21 campaign amid reports of a transfer budget of around £10m, making it difficult to get excited for the year ahead as the takeover saga drags on.

Still, the club are thought to be in with a good chance to bringing Tuanzebe to St James’ Park this summer. With Raphael Varane heading to Old Trafford, the Red Devils’ academy graduate is believed to feel he deserves more of a chance and The Chronicle have claimed his agents are pleased with the interest on Tyneside, with the player having worked with Steve Bruce before.

How important a signing could he be?

Bruce is said to be keen to strengthen his defence and missed out on a move for top target Kristoffer Ajer after owner Mike Ashley refused to match Brentford’s spending on the Norway international. With that in mind, a move for a young, versatile option could help give him more options and perhaps the pace Tuanzebe offers could bring something different to St James’ Park.

Given how the summer has gone so far, any sign of a new face – particularly one to have played Champions League football – could also help raise spirits. It has clearly been a difficult summer so far after playing pretty much the entirety of last season behind closed doors, so signings could at least help restore some optimism ahead of the new campaign.

What has been said about Tuanzebe?

Speaking to Football Insider in May, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor praised the player and urged former club Aston Villa to re-sign him.

“He’s the sort of player that would push the two Villa centre-halves at the moment,” he said.

“He’s got great pace, he’s a great player and he’s played at Aston Villa before. He can play at right-back too so he can fill in at that position.

“100 per cent, it’s something Villa should be looking at.

“It’s come to the stage for him, how long do you want to stay at Man United and play five games a season? He’s got to look at his own career now and the amount of appearances he’s making.

“I’m sure he’ll be wanting to leave in the summer and that would be a great signing.”
