Miguel Almiron is set to stay at Newcastle United this summer, according to The Athletic.

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

The report does claim that, while the 27-year-old was frustrated at times last season, no bids seem imminent.

Atletico Madrid are said to be keen and there are thought to be figures close to the Paraguay star who want him to leave although the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to mean clubs do not necessarily have the money to put together a package big enough to tempt Newcastle into selling.

How long does Almiron have left on his contract?

On paper at least, Newcastle would appear to be in a strong position when it comes to any potential negotiation.

Almiron is still under contract (one that reportedly sees him earn in the region of £42k-per-week) until the summer of 2024, so there isn’t any real need to sell him outside of potentially raising money to fund more incomings.

Still, although manager Steve Bruce has moved him around the team, he’s formed a major part of the manager’s plans since initially dropping out of the starting side at the beginning of the campaign, starting all but 10 of Newcastle’s 38 league games last season.

If a huge offer did come in, perhaps it would be worth considering. However, with money looking tight across Europe and no real need to sell until at least next summer, keeping him seems feasible.

Back in February, The Athletic spoke of how he looked ‘liberated’ playing as a No.10 back in February, he made the most carries of any Newcastle player into the opposition’s final third last time out (57, via FBREF), so has certainly made an attacking impact even if 18 goal contributions in 91 games hasn’t exactly been a prolific return.
