Newcastle United have offered Andy Carroll a one-year extension to his contract, according to The Chronicle

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

With the towering striker thought to have been frustrated about his lack of game time, as well as his appearance in Newcastle’s list of released players last week, this summer appeared to be the end for Carroll on Tyneside.

However, the report suggests he has been offered fresh terms as his current deal comes to a close at the end of this month and that negotiations remain ongoing.

How much does Carroll earn at Newcastle United?

Given his injury record over the years, Carroll always appeared to be somewhat of a financial risk for clubs.

Indeed, he’s believed to have been on an incentivised deal at St James’ Park after moving back to the North East in the summer of 2019, although SpotRac suggests the 32-year-old was earning in the region of £75k-per-week if all targets were met.

Should Newcastle keep Carroll?

The former England striker certainly has his uses, as was evident when he came on against Tottenham Hotspur in September and won a controversial penalty by battling Eric Dier in the air.

Still, the fact is, Carroll has scored just once in 37 Premier League games since coming back to the club and, with finances looking tight this summer, surely the money spent on his wages could be better used elsewhere. That’s not to suggest he’s been a complete and utter flop, it’s just that the club might have to be creative with their finances over the coming months.

Surely there are better options out there than a player to have produced so little in the way of goals of late. Granted, injuries haven’t helped Carroll over the years but he hasn’t scored more than three goals in a season since the 2016/17 campaign.

Newcastle United can do better.
