There is a chance Steve Bruce could leave Newcastle United this summer, according to The Daily Telegraph

Why would Bruce leave Newcastle?

The report suggests a lot of Bruce’s decision will depend on how much money he is given to spend this summer with people close to the 60-year-old reportedly urging him to leave his post ahead of meetings between the manager and Mike Ashley.

While he has managed to keep Newcastle in the Premier League during his two seasons in charge, the former Sunderland manager is a hugely unpopular figure amongst swathes of the club’s support, with 95% of polled fans (via The Chronicle) voting in favour of sacking him following March’s 3-0 loss away at Brighton.

Previously, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has suggested the view from the club is that Bruce is sticking around for the long haul, so if he were to leave, it would seemingly be on his terms.

What is Newcastle’s transfer budget likely to be?

Clearly, it’s hard to know a definitive answer on that but The Athletic did recently suggest Bruce was already looking at potential transfers and loan deals in the expectation he wouldn’t have much money to spend. Given the fact the club have been playing behind closed doors since February 29th 2020 and Ashley isn’t exactly renowned for backing his managers particularly well, it’s not hard to imagine this summer being a relatively quiet one.

How long does Bruce have left on his Newcastle contract?

As it stands, Bruce still has another season to go on his contract at St James’ Park.

Talk of a new contract did emerge in April (also via The Telegraph) providing Newcastle stayed in the Premier League which has clearly happened following Fulham’s relegation yesterday. Still, perhaps we could soon be in a situation whereby Bruce walks out on the club, when it seemed as if they would have to sack him earlier this season.

What has Steve Bruce said about his future?

Speaking to talkSPORT yesterday, Bruce did hint at the fact he could leave.

“It is for others to decide,” he said (via The Mirror).

“Most clubs will have discussions and review the season. I am a football person and it is still too early to retire. But that is a conversation other people will have.”

“We are always one dip away from that situation and it is something I will have to think very long and hard about.”
