Jacob Murphy still has a year to go on his Newcastle United contract though it is unclear whether or not he will stay next season, according to Football Insider

What is his contract situation?

The 26-year-old was thought to have only a year left on the £25k-per-week contract he initially penned in 2017 but, according to the report, a source within the club has suggested he is actually under contract for another twelve months.

Still, they also suggest that it is too early to say whether or not he will stay on Tyneside next season despite the fact Steve Bruce recently claimed he was keen to ensure Murphy stayed.

Who is keen?

Within the report, Rangers are said to be keen on a move while Football Insider have previously claimed the likes of Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City were interested prior to the former Norwich City man playing his way back into the side.

Should he be kept?

Absolutely, yes.

Capable of playing as both a right-winger and a right-wing-back, Murphy has proven crucial this season.

His recent strike against Burnley made that two goals and two assists so far and, while four goal contributions might not sound like a lot, only three players have bettered that in Bruce’s side so far. Indeed, according to WhoScored, he’s averaged the second-highest dribbles per game (1.6), the fourth-highest shots over the same period (1.2) and the fourth-highest number of crosses too (0.7).

While the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson might take more of the plaudits, Murphy has proven far more effective than summer signing Ryan Fraser this season, helping supplement the attack amid a number of injury and illness problems for Newcastle.
