Journalist Ben Jacobs has provided an update in regards to the potential fate of the Newcastle United takeover.

What’s the story?

Yesterday was a day for updates on the takeover process with The Daily Telegraph claiming talks had been put on hold as the club battle against relegation.

Indeed, Jacobs’ thread posted on Twitter was hugely interesting and suggested the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund wouldn’t necessarily be completely out of the picture if Steve Bruce doesn’t keep the team up this season, though he did admit the situation was starting to look grim.

Ultimately, the situation is still up in the air with a lot of movement needed in terms of the problems with Qatar-based beIN Sports and Mike Ashley is reportedly unlikely to consider any fresh bid from another suitor if it was a lower price in the event of relegation.

The Verdict

What a mess Newcastle have got themselves into yet again.

Jacobs’ update – while newsworthy – hints at more uncertainty in regards to what will happen at boardroom level and it is starting to feel like nothing will ever happen. After so many false dawns, it’s getting increasingly difficult to get excited about a takeover, even if it is an important story to cover.

Either way, the club are at genuine risk of suffering a third relegation under Ashley’s ownership and, no matter the uncertainty in regards to the future, he will be at fault once again. It’s not hard to argue that Bruce has a side capable of staying up some of the players he has available but he has presided over some awful runs in form, much like Steve McClaren did in 2016 before he was sacked with only nine games to go.

History could be repeating itself for Newcastle United, in more ways than one.
