When discussing the future of Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, journalist Dean Jones suggested he was in fact under pressure.

What’s the story?

After Pete O’Rourke mentioned the Rangers manager as a potential target for the Magpies, albeit with a slightly tongue-in-cheek tone, Jones did reveal Bruce was under pressure although a move for the former England captain might not be likely.

“Newcastle, I think 100% [should be keen on Gerrard],” he said on the latest episode of the Touchline Talk Podcast from the 9:20 mark onwards.

“Steve Bruce is definitely under pressure right now. I think they’re considering – even if they stay up – ‘is this the right way to go’?

In an ideal world, would Gerrard be a good appointment?

Based on this season’s exploits, you’d have to say yes.

Going unbeaten in the league so far and also impressing in Europe too, Gerrard has finally ended Celtic’s dominance and looks to be setting his club for a real crack at making a sustained impact on the continent. While many will point to the fact the Scottish Premiership is largely considered to be a level below the Premier League, it’s hard to argue with that kind of record.

A revered figure in English football, he’d certainly make quite the splash.

The Verdict

While a move for Gerrard does look unlikely (he’s thought to have previously rejected a move from Newcastle) it is at least promising to hear Bruce is fighting for his future even if other reports have suggested otherwise.

After a miserable season on Tyneside, the lack of decisive movement in the dugout could still could them with the side now firmly entrenched in a relegation battle they could have quite easily avoided.

Still, given his set-up at Rangers and links with the Liverpool job, quite why Gerrard would even want to move to St. James’ Park is unclear.
