Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has suggested he wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle United didn’t win another game this season.

What’s the story?

Speaking after the miserable loss away at Brighton last night, the former Magpies manager talked of how he didn’t think Steve Bruce’s side looked capable of picking up another three points between now and the end of the season.

“I look at that group of players and I wouldn’t be confident about them winning another game,” he said.

“If that’s their attitude towards a game that was winnable for them tonight, against a team they’re fighting with in terms of relegation, they just didn’t show any attitude for a real fight.”

Is he right?

Based on last night’s showing, it’s hard to argue with him.

Multiple journalists have called for Bruce to be sacked after seeing a team who had only won once at home all season absolutely batter his side. Only basement side Sheffield United – who still managed to beat Newcastle – are below them in the form table based off of the last six games. Without a win since early Feburary with the likes of Tottenham, West Ham, Arsenal and Liverpool still to play, this situation is looking increasingly bleak.

The Verdict

The team in full-blown crisis.

Amid reports of fallings out with players such as Matt Ritchie and Karl Darlow, Bruce’s position would surely be untenable at most other clubs though Mike Ashley’s Newcastle appear to think they can gamble on staying up with the 60-year-old in charge. Exactly what the thinking behind that is as unclear as ever but – once again – the hierarchy look to be making life much more difficult for themselves.
