Shields Gazette journalist Liam Kennedy has lifted the lid on the extent that Steve Bruce delegates responsibilities at the club.

What’s the story?

The writer was speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith about all the latest goings-on at Newcastle United.

One key focal point for discussion was what goes on at the training ground amid emerging concerns surrounding Bruce’s approach to training.

A separate Daily Mail report shows Bruce has allocated six in nine of the club’s post-Brighton days to rest.

Kennedy said of Bruce’s approach:

“It’s my understanding that Steve Bruce selects personnel in this team, he picks this team, and that’s why we see certain selections, he picks this team.

“He doesn’t do the training; he doesn’t do anything else. My understanding is that’s all down to [Graeme] Jones and the coaches there.

“He doesn’t do any of that, but he still selects the team. So you can see there where the divide is, you can see there that could easily cause problems for anybody.”

The Verdict

It is not beyond the realms of unreasonable that managers would delegate certain duties to better-suited coaches, but surely Bruce would be better placed to be intervening in at least some aspects of training.

A more hands-on approach could help in identifying the core strengths and weaknesses of key personnel and would allow Bruce to factor in his own judgements in his team selections, rather than relying solely on the opinion of others.

Given his proclivity to schedule staggering blocks of rest for his team,  training looks to be a concerningly lax elements of the club’s affairs.
