Newcastle United is in amongst a host of English and European sides interested in Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

What’s the story?

According to El Gol Digital, Newcastle are in the hunt for the Belgian striker.

It is reported that in addition to Spanish side Real Sociedad, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the domestic sides keen on the services of 25-year-old.

Origi has suffered a lack of meaningful opportunities to come into the first team and impress, with just 181 Premier League minutes under his name this season.

Having fallen down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp, it seems that Newcastle are among a number of clubs alerted to his potential availability in the summer transfer window.

The ex-Lille hitman has enjoyed a previous spell away from Anfield in the Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg on loan and was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League-winning season.

Origi scored a decisive brace to fell Lionel Messi’s ambitions of a UCL win in the 2019 semi-finals before scoring the second goal against Spurs in Liverpool’s trophy-winning final.

The £10 million 2014 signing is also noted in the report as only being open to a move elsewhere if he would be guaranteed to be a crucial starter for the club.

Origi has 19 goals in 100 appearances for the Reds, albeit mostly from the bench or as a rotational option.

The Verdict

Believed to be available for just £17 million and with plenty of years left ahead of him in his career, Origi’s proven record at club and European level could make him a shrewd acquisition.

He could partner Callum Wilson in a two-striker system to deadly effect, though he would clearly need to be accommodated with Newcastle’s top league scorer to be kept happy.
