Newcastle United could be set for a managerial coup following the latest reports of internal discontent at the club.

What’s the story?

According to a report by Football Insider, many Newcastle players are said to be in a state of ‘shock’ following the board’s decision to retain faith in Steve Bruce – despite the recent 3-0 Brighton loss exacerbating relegation fears at the club.

According to Sky Sports, it is reported that Bruce retains the backing of owner Mike Ashley due to Bruce’s loyalty to the club.

However, separate sources have indicated that several players are discussing going to managing director Lee Charnley in order to make their feelings known after losing all faith in Steve Bruce’s ability to steer the club clear of the drop.

It is noted that the meeting would not be to directly to oust Bruce but to explore options as to how the club can change to avoid relegation.

Many players were expecting the Brighton game to be a make-or-break moment for Bruce, leading many to be shocked following his retention – as many expected the game to be the final straw.

Having not yet been relieved of his duties, the faction of players considering a showdown are said to be cautious over whether they would yet want to hold such a meeting amid a risk that it may be counterproductive.

The Verdict

No impending showdown could be a stay of execution for Bruce’s contract, but it is nonetheless a new catalyst for change at Newcastle.

Internal dressing room pressure could prove to be a fresh source of contention at the club that might finally make the weight of anti-Bruce sentiment too strong to ignore.
