Speaking to Paraguayan outlet VersusNewcastle United star Miguel Almiron has opened up on his preferred position.

What’s the story?

It has been over two years since Almiron moved to Tyneside now and, during that period, he’s played in a variety of positions. Indeed, Transfermarkt note he’s been deployed in five different berths this season alone, ranging from a central midfielder to both wide positions as a natural winger and a left or right sided forward.

Now, he’s confirmed where he sees himself playing in an ideal scenario.

“I feel more comfortable playing as a second striker or in midfield, looser,” he said.

“But I don’t have a problem playing as a left or right winger either. The player has to adapt, but being honest I feel more comfortable playing as a second striker, finding more of the ball.”

The Verdict

Even when Almiron’s agent was stirring up some discussion that his client might look to leave St. James’ Park, Steve Bruce came out to praise the player for his attitude, so it’s barely a surprise to hear that he’s happy performing any role for the team.

Still, having made his name as a forward with Atlanta, it’s easy to see why he’d prefer playing there. During his time in the MLS, Almiron registered 42 goal involvements in just 62 games, compared to only 14 in 77 as a Premier League player.

Obviously, there is a step-up in quality but playing in a largely defensive team in a variety of positions can’t help. Having proven his worth across the pond, trusting him to operate behind Callum Wilson might be a smarter way to go long-term.

It has been difficult for Almiron to find a regular place in this Newcastle side. Clearly, he sees himself as more of a forward player so perhaps it’s worth trying him out there. After all, it’s not as if the current system is working all too well given the team’s recent miserable run of form.
