The bad news could get worse for according to The Athletic

What’s the story?

During a week in which Fabian Schar, Javi Manquillo and Callum Wilson have all been struck down with reasonably long-term injury problems, this report suggests it could be even worse news for the latter.

Ruled out for between six and eight weeks by Bruce as a result of a deep hamstring tear, the report reveals that some of their sources believe even that lengthy timeframe could be optimistic. Indeed, there appears to be a chance he could be out for even longer.

What does this mean?

With fifteen games to go, a lot is going to be asked of the likes of Saint-Maxmin, Miguel Almiron and . Given the edge they gave their teammates in the win over Southampton, they appear to be a more reliable source of goal contributions than the likes of and Joelinton who have scored three Premier League goals between them in a -and-a-half.

Dwight could also come into the side too but, if Wilson is out for any longer than eight weeks, we’re pretty much talking about a season-ending injury for Newcastle’s top scorer and assist provider. While Bruce’s side are ten points clear of the drop zone as things stand, missing him will be a huge blow and his teammates in attacking midfield berths will surely have to step up.

The Verdict

It’s such a shame Wilson’s hamstrings have let him down.

On course to better his best-ever goalscoring return in the Premier League, his all-round play has also been crucial.  No one has recorded as many assists in Bruce’s and even his average of 0.8 key passes and 1.1 dribbles (via WhoScored) sees him rank within the top seven in the team.

Sadly, his first season on Tyneside looks to have all but ended in disappointment if even the eight-week return date is seen as optimistic.
