It would take an ‘epiphany’ for Mike Ashley to turn to Rafa Benitez despite Newcastle United’s struggles.

What’s the story?

That was the view of the Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth in reaction to comments from Duncan Castles on the latest edition of the Transfer Window Podcast claiming the Newcastle owner had reached out to the out-of-work Spaniard.

Having departed St. James’ Park in the summer of 2019 citing a difference in ambition, it does seem as if their relationship would have to significantly improve if Benitez was to return to the club where he was so popular.

Is it likely?

It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which Benitez comes back under this ownership.

Indeed, Newcastle have also recently brought in Graeme Jones to work alongside Steve Bruce, who was said to still have the backing of the club’s top brass and may even have been afforded sympathy as a result of the injury crisis only a few days ago.

None of that would suggest Bruce is under any pressure.

The Verdict

For many supporters, Benitez coming back would likely be a dream scenario.

A hugely popular figure on Tyneside, he obviously knows many of the players in the squad and almost kept Newcastle up in 2016 after the sacking of Steve McClaren, another massively criticised Ashley appointment.

However, considering the backing Bruce seemingly has, as well as how the Benitez era ended only a short time ago, there appear to be too many hurdles to overcome.

Sadly for Newcastle, they’re just going to have to carry on.
