Despite the restoration of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Luke Edwards has provided a disappointing update in regards to its potential impact on the takeover of Newcastle United.

What’s the story?

Qatari powers are understood to have attempted to block the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund’s efforts to replace Mike Ashley in ownership of the club as a result of the alleged piracy of beIN Sports.

So, the fact the two Arab states have set their differences aside may have sparked fresh hope any deal could be forced through.

However, Edwards has revealed on Twitter that the news is unlikely to change much on the takeover front in the medium-term though did hint it could be positive in the long-term, calling it a ‘small step’.

The Verdict

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get excited about the prospect of a takeover.

While comments on its progress are certainly newsworthy and supporters have every right to cling onto any sort of hope the situation will soon get better, the story has dragged on for almost a year now.

More pressing issues are afoot at the moment, such as Steve Bruce trying to keep his side’s head above the water when it comes to the battle for Premier League survival. Sadly, that is looking more and more like what this season – like so many others – is going to boil down to.

It’s the remit he described in December and, after failing to beat Brentford in the Carabao Cup with an improving Arsenal up next in the FA Cup, it could soon be the only competition in which the Toon compete. Without Premier League survival, the club’s attractiveness in terms of a potential sale would surely drop.
