According to Germany outlet, BildNewcastle United could face competition when it comes to luring Inter Milan’s Valentino Lazaro to St. James’ Park this month. Indeed, the player’s agent was spotted at St. James’ Park (via Andrew Musgrove) for the win over Chelsea on Saturday but the recent report suggests there could be a spanner in the works.

That’s because RB Leipzig are said to have entered the race for the player. The Bundesliga league leaders are understood to want to lure him to Germany this month with Lazaro having previously there, having played for Hertha Berlin between 2017 and 2019.

What does this mean for Newcastle?

Potentially worrying.

While the Austrian international isn’t the striker the Magpies perhaps should be looking at given the struggles of Joelinton and Andy Carroll when it comes to scoring, he is able to operate as both a right-midfielder and a right-wingback (per Transfermarkt), so could be a useful addition given the injury problems on Tyneside.

Obviously, Leipzig are leading the Bundesliga as things stand and are also in the Champions League knock-outs so perhaps would look a more attracting prospect than mid-table Newcastle right now, especially given Lazaro has previously played for Red Bull Salzburg – who have a history of providing players for the German outfit.

Given the fact his agent was in Newcastle, it’s safe to assume the Toon Army are keen on Lazaro, so missing out on him at this stage would have to be considered a blow with just 11 days left in the window.
