Glenn Murry might not be the most exciting name on Newcastle United’s reported wishlist given links to players such as World Cup-winner Olivier Giroud and Serie A record-breaker Krzysztof Piątek but the Sun’s Alan Nixon has provided an interesting update in regard to the Brighton man’s future.

Conducting a Q&A on Twitter yesterday, the journalist revealed that the Seagulls would look for £500k were they to let the 36-year-old leave the Amex Stadium this month, following links between the player and the Toon Army from the Guardian earlier in the month.

Is this a likely deal for Newcastle?

Probably not but it does perhaps depend on how this month pans out for the club.

Under Mike Ashley, the Magpies have rarely signed a player that age. In fact, not since the arrivals of Sol Campbell and Shefki Kuqi at the start of the decade just gone have the current ownership regime sanctioned such moves, though Craigh Hope of the Daily Mail did recently suggest the club could be in line for a frustrating window and face the prospect of shopping in the deadline day market.

Should that happen, perhaps a cheap move for Murray could make sense depending on how the table looks. If, for example, the Toon Army continue their slide towards the wrong end of the table and are facing the prospect of going through the rest of the campaign with just Joelinton and Andry Carroll – who have just one goal between them – perhaps desperation could strike.

Given his age, it’s hard to see Ashley sanctioning a deal unless things get very desperate up at St. James’ Park towards the end of the month.
