Indeed, the Dutchman impressed during his loan stint on Tyneside prior to his season-ending injury against Chelsea earlier this month and a £10m deal with Eintracht Frankfurt had been agreed to sign the player permanently, according to Kicker via the Chronicle.
However, with Hope reporting that Rose’s loan move to St. James’ Park had an obligation to buy inserted in the deal, he suggests Willems may not return, given Rose’s likely first-choice status in the squad considering the level of his involvement with Tottenham and England in recent years.
Still, with Willems proving an important figure during his short stint in black and white – having scored 2 goals this season against Liverpool and Manchester City – fans on Twitter weren’t exactly delighted by the idea of not seeing him back next season. Would be a shame. Rose is obviously quality but would be gutted if we have seen the last of Willems for us.
