Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has revealed what he is looking for in his ideal player ahead of the January transfer window.
It was revealed by the Chronicle that the Magpies are on the lookout for an energetic midfielder to enhance his options in the middle of the park at St James’ Park.
Bruce shared that his needs in a player are straightforward and that he wants a new signing to be willing to have a go as well as being physically capable – something which is essential in the Premier League.
“I think it’s pretty straightforward for me,” he told the Chronicle.
“You have to be willing to have a go. Physicality is huge. Physically, you have to have the ability to run, especially in the Premier League. I’ve learnt that over the years.”
Bruce went on to suggest that any incomings have to be genuine characters, who want to come in and put in the hard work to improve.
OPINION
It was suggested that Bruce had to be pushed for an answer on his ideal player ahead of the transfer window, something which could bring up the argument that he doesn’t want to give too much away in terms of his business. The Magpies’ defence has been one of the shining lights this season so far, so that area appears to be more than solid. There are big question marks surrounding their midfield and front three – possibly in the final third they are at their biggest. Between Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, and Miguel Almiron they have only been involved in three goals this season, and that is nowhere near good enough. With little options on the bench to come on and bring in some more competition when the main three might not be performing, it puts little pressure on them. Bruce should target attacking reinforcements before his midfield, with the Longstaff brothers currently pushing Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey – two players that offer more than enough competition.
