OPINION

It just isn’t working for Joelinton at Newcastle United right now. You almost have to feel sorry for the Brazilian, because with each passing week he looks less and less like a striker capable of leading a line in the Premier League, and much less like one who would justify a price tag of £40 million. He was his usual anonymous self in the 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday, and it didn’t take long for supporters to get on his back. Ultimately, the issue is that the Magpies are looking for a robust, physical presence to provide a focal point for the attack. With Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron out wide, service should never really be a problem, but far too often this season we have seen the Toon Army blunted by the lack of a meaningful spearhead. The Brazilian is averaging 1.5 shots a game at the moment, as per Whoscored, which isn’t the worst figure in the world, and yet he still just has one goal in 16 Premier League appearances. Something’s got to give soon, otherwise the South American is in real danger of becoming the most costly flop in United’s long history. With Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll breathing down his neck, time is surely running out for the 23-year-old.
