Canadian international defender David Edgar has taken to Instagram to send a message to Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll.

The 42 cap international used to play for the Toon Army, and was quick to sing the praises of his former teammate, who provided an assist for Jonjo Shelvey in the Magpies’ 2-1 comeback win over Southampton on Sunday.

Posting on his personal account, Carroll shared a photo from that game with the caption: “Sticking Together And Getting The Job Done!!”

Replying to that post, Edgar said: “Big man’s on fire (flame emojis)”.

OPINION

Edgar’s not far wrong here. Carroll has been really impressive over his last two outings, and the hope from Toon supporters will be that he can continue this kind of form going unabated by the usual injuries that plague him. His introduction against the Saints on Sunday was a real game changer, and his assist for Shelvey was different class. The tenacity and will to chase the ball down in a wide area, followed by the quality of the cross with all its whip and verve, was fully deserving of a goal, and it massively shifted the momentum of the game. Beyond that though, we’re beginning to see Carroll do what Carroll does best. The big man won eight aerial duels in 31 minutes yesterday, as per Whoscored, and that staggering number shows that he is still as potent as ever when it comes to causing chaos.
